Safe housing is a need shared by everyone who comes to Coburn Place. Once you have been approved and completed your intake, you will be given the keys to your own, private apartment. Your new apartment will be fully-furnished – including furniture, linens, dishes, toiletries and even food. Depending on the size of your family, your apartment will be a studio, two or three bedroom unit. Each apartment has its own bathroom, kitchen and living spaces designed for privacy and to promote independent living. This will be your home for the next two years.
Coburn Place does not charge rent. Electric, gas and water are included. You must provide your own phone, cable and/or Internet service. To prepare you for the responsibilities that come with independent living, you will have the opportunity to contribute to a savings account, based on the amount of rent you would pay for your income level. This amount never exceeds 30% of your income. Any money that is paid for housing costs (minus any damage or assessed fees) is returned to you when you move out. This “nest egg” will provide you with a great start as you move into permanent housing.
Your apartment is located inside a former school building. The parking lot is secured by a fence and gate with a call box. It is monitored 24/7 by a staff member, a Mentor, with security cameras. Entrance to the parking lot and building must be granted by the Mentor on duty. We are conveniently located on the bus line near several convenience stores and restaurants, a police station and a library. There are many amenities to make you feel right at home including:
Community-based transitional housing is available on a limited basis to survivors with or without children. Applicants will work with the Advocates at Coburn Place to determine safe and affordable housing options in the community and develop and Personal Plan for Independence as well as a Permanent Housing Action Plan. All supportive services provided on-site at Coburn Place are available to participants in Community-Based Transitional Housing. Services such as Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World and RentSmart are strongly encouraged. Coburn Place Advocates will work very closely with participants to ensure meaningful access to relevant resources and provide support so that participants feel prepared to take over 100% of their rent payments at the end of the rental assistance program (of up to 12 months).
